Background

View of Shanghai

Shanghai, with a population of more than 23 million, is the largest and most developed city in China. In the past 20 years Shanghai has again become an attractive city for tourists from all over the world. The world had its eyes on the city when it hosted the 2010 World Expo, recording the greatest number of visitors in the event's history. Shanghai is a fascinating mix of East and West. Today, Shanghai's goal is to develop into a world-class financial and economic centre of China and Asia. Shanghai has increased its role in finance, banking, and as a major destination for corporate headquarters, fuelling demand for a highly educated and cosmopolitan workforce. Shanghai is one of the least polluted major cities in China, although the degree of pollution might be more severe when using international comparisons. For this reason, coupled with a lesser degree of focus placed on national politics, visitors will find a much different experience than visiting Beijing.
